Collector's item

Ulysse Nardin pays tribute to the first flagship of the Imperial Russian Navy with The Frigate Shtandart watch. It is presented in the diamond-studded egg of the Tsars. Commissioned by Peter the Great, the Shtandart was first launched in August 1703. The Shtandart remained in the navy until 1727, at which time Catherine I, second wife of Peter the Great, ordered the frigate restored.

Run not as sporting in HK as other stops

Hong Kong has fewer torch-bearers who are athletes or have a sports background than some relay cities.

Only 55, or nearly half, of the 120 bearers are from the sports community. Of them, only 48 are athletes or retired sportsmen.

The percentage is lower than that of the relay in St Petersburg and San Francisco.

Diamond lovers were transported to a rather tropical St Petersburg for Italian jeweller Bulgari's celebration of its latest collection, Astrale. Scenes from the March international launch of the collection in the snow-covered city formed a backdrop for guests at the extravagant poolside dinner.

Breaking down barriers by bike

Russian artist Vladislav Ketov, 45, is spending nine years cycling around the world's coastline. He is 72,000 kilometres and 66 countries into his 220,000-km journey, which he plans to finish in his home town of St Petersburg in May 2000. His project, called Eden, is aimed at promoting environmental awareness and breaking down barriers between countries.

Morcelli on top of world

WORLD record holder Noureddine Morcelli of Algeria ran the fastest 1,500 metres in the world this year when he clocked three minutes, 32.45 seconds at the Goodwill Meeting at St Petersburg, Russia.

Morcelli had run the previous fastest time this year, too, recording with a time of 3:32.99 at Seville on June 3.
