India's luxury hotels swap global brands as revenues slump

Less than nine months after opening the first hotel in Mumbai under its brand, Hong Kong luxury chain operator Shangri-La Asia handed the keys back to the owner.

Local chains expanding

Home-grown hotel chains have continued their expansion outside the city, a tradition started by Mandarin Oriental and Peninsula a few decades ago.

The Ovolo Group, which owns and operates four hotels and two serviced apartments in Hong Kong, has picked Melbourne as the place for its first overseas venture.

New World to expand Pentahotel brand in Asia

New World Hospitality has announced a US$160 million plan to expand the number of hotels under its Pentahotels brand to 30 in the next five years. The expansion will focus on the mainland and cities elsewhere in Asia, said chief executive Sonia Cheng.

She said New World Group would own 30 per cent of the hotels and other developers the rest.
