Electricity growth powers down but rise up the line

Growth in power use halved on the mainland last year from 2011 due to poorer domestic and overseas economic conditions, but a marked pickup is forecast for this year.

National electricity demand grew 5.5 per cent last year to 4.96 billion kilowatt-hours, down from 11.7 per cent in 2011 and 14.6 per cent in 2010, according to the industry regulator, the National Energy Administration.

Summer power shortages loom for mainland

Industry officials said on Monday that, starting next month, China could find itself suffering from a combined power shortage of 30 million kilowatts during the peak demand hours.
