Top TVB executive Stephen Chan Chi-wan complained before the start of his trial on fraud and corruption charges about last-minute prosecution plans to call Mona Fong Yat- wah, wife of the station's 103-year-old founder, Run Run Shaw, as a witness, the District Court heard yesterday.

Chan complained to the court that the evidence from Fong would be useless, his lawyers said.

The divorce between Michael Hotung and former TVB actress Katie Chan Fook-sang has ended up with litigation over words said to the media. On Wednesday, Hotung filed a lawsuit against Chan for allegedly defamatory comments made in media interviews after they announced the breakdown of their marriage at the end of last year.

Corrections & clarifications

In the report 'Young discover joy of English in drama' on page C1 yesterday, the name of a member of the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research was wrongly stated as Stephen Chan Chi-wan. The correct name should be Stephen Chan Shu-ki.
