Ex-girlfriend accuses Stephen Chow of using 'corporate veil' to avoid payout

The High Court yesterday began hearing a claim by the former girlfriend of comedian Stephen Chow Sing-chi that he is trying to hide behind his corporation to avoid paying her HK$80 million in commission.

Barristers for Alice Yu Man-fung and Star Royale, which owns the house in which Chow lives, argued whether the company should be struck out as the second defendant in the case.

Comedian Stephen Chow Sing-chi yesterday sought to strike out a claim by his former girlfriend for HK$80 million she says he owes her in commissions on the expected sale of a Peak house.

High Court Master Jack Wong Kin-tong yesterday transferred the case between Chow and Alice Yu Man-fung for a hearing by a judge in chambers.

The box office results for 2008 are in and - surprise, surprise - a flick by funny man Stephen Chow Sing-chi topped the list of Chinese-language movies. CJ7 , Chow's 'dramedy' hit about a labourer's son and his alien toy (pictured), took HK$51 million at the local box office during its seven-week run early last year, according to figures released by the Motion Picture Industry Association.

Star, magazine reach deal in defamation case

Film star Stephen Chow Sing-chi reached an out-of-court settlement with Next Magazine yesterday over a defamatory story in 2003. Chow agreed to accept a payment from the magazine and his lawyer read a statement in the Court of First Instance before Mr Justice Andrew Chung On-tak saying that Chow hoped the media could learn from the incident.

Box offices pull in HK$430m over holiday

Cinemas in Hong Kong raked in HK$430 million at the box office over the Lunar New Year holiday, up 7.5 per cent on the HK$400 million made during same period last year, the Theatres Association estimated.
