Marc Faber, the Swiss investor known as Dr Doom, was the star turn of RTHK's Money For Nothing finance programme yesterday morning. This was a special show in that it was a winning item from an auction for Operation Santa Claus, which raises money for charity.

Smart money on mainland boom

Assiduous lunchers could have heard two different versions of the mainland's economic outlook expounded by visiting experts in Hong Kong last week.

On Wednesday, clients of Morgan Stanley heard the investment bank's chief economist Stephen Roach predict that 2007 will be the year the mainland succeeds in decisively changing its economic direction.

Further cooling measures expected

Beijing would introduce further measures to cool the economy in addition to the one-year lending rate rise announced by the central bank on Thursday, leading economists said yesterday.

Morgan Stanley managing director and chief economist Stephen Roach said the rate increase alone would not be enough to rein in growth.
