Go with Cruz for Smart choice

Derek Cruz's Valley specialist Smart Winner can maintain his unbeaten record at the city venue by landing the competitive finale on the midweek card. The edgy sort was withdrawn on his last intended start when he was fractious in the stalls and has since injured his trainer in a trackwork incident, but he can atone tonight providing he stays in the right frame of mind.

King proves he's value for money

Steven King again showed he is one of least-utilised talents in Hong Kong racing with a pretty double at Sha Tin but he won't get the chance for a quick follow-up. King won on Frame's People and Spring Fountain yesterday but goes to Happy Valley midweek with only one mount.

Native Language earns top marks in notebook

While trackwork has been relatively quiet over the Christmas period, six barrier trials were held at Happy Valley last weekend and one who was put in the notebook was Ricky Yiu Poon-fie's Native Language, who led all the way in the fourth heat after showing plenty of early dash.

Size worth weight in gold

John Size and Chiu Chow Brother continued their climb up the mountain together at Sha Tin yesterday, but the air is starting to get thin for at least one of them. Once again, Chiu Chow Brother provided the vehicle for Steven King to show his skills, arriving in the final few bounds to grab Rebel Leader and take the second division of the feature Fakei Cup.

Acrobatic performance a clear sign of long-term potential

Peter Chapple-Hyam's Acrobatic gave one of the most eye-catching performances at Sha Tin on Saturday night when finishing a decidedly unlucky runner-up in the final event (race 25), which was narrowly won by Lucky Sabre under a well-judged ride from John Egan.

Mother-in-law's luck for doubling King

Some husbands may not look forward to a visit from the mother-in-law but jockey Steven King is an exception after yesterday's double at Sha Tin. 'My mother-in-law, Lyn, has been coming here to visit Leanne and I for seven years and she has never been to the races in Hong Kong before,' King said after kicking home Platinum Express and Don Sebastian.

'He saves everything for his races - just the type of horse you want to be on. I like him'

Electronic Unicorn yesterday underlined that he was no forlorn hope in next month's showpiece Hong Kong Mile when a blistering turn of foot left a high-class Chevalier Cup field toiling in his wake at Sha Tin.

Electronic Unicorn might not be ready for the big boys yet but he's going into Sunday's $7 million Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup in the form of his life.

Leading Australian jockey Steven King has flown back, only a matter of weeks after splitting with retaining trainer Ricky Yiu Poon-fie, to partner Electronic Unicorn in the weekend's Group Two 2,000-metre contest.

Premium makes right royal nap

King's Premium appears to have been set to take tonight's third event on the Sha Tin dirt.

As usual on these dirt fixtures, those with proven dirt form are the ones on which to concentrate.

The problem can be that the public over bet them so while they should be top of the list, by the same token don't take too short a price.
