Chinese smartphone makers boost OmniVision’s outlook

Image sensor maker OmniVision Technologies forecast a current-quarter profit ahead of analysts’ estimates, encouraged by higher demand for its camera chips from smartphone makers in China.

China Resources to build US$1.2b Wuxi chip plant

State-owned conglomerate China Resources (Holdings) will invest US$1.2 billion to expand its semiconductor production in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, and move up the value chain.

The company will build a plant in Wuxi New District to produce the more highly valued eight-inch computer wafers, said the Hong Kong-registered firm's chairman, Song Lin.

Daiwa ends deals

Daiwa Associate Holdings, the electronic product and component maker, has terminated distributorship deals with SGS-Thomson and Bourns.

Company secretary Man Wai-chuen did not give any reason for the decision.

The two companies accounted for about 15 per cent of Daiwa's turnover for the year to March 31.

QPL buys French plant

ASAT SA, a wholly owned subsidiary of QPL International Holdings, has acquired land including semi-conductor manufacturing facilities, plant and equipment located in Nancy, France from SGS-Thomson Microelectronics SA for $23.19 million.

The facility occupies a site of about 56,800 sq m, with a building of 8,200 sq m.
