Yuletide yearnings

In this age of incremental global-warming, most northern European capitals get nothing more spectacular than grey and drizzly conditions as autumn gives way to winter. Not so Stockholm, where electric-blue skies often accompany a fantastical cityscape enrobed in glittering snow.

Record Year

Look out for package deals that are expected to be available soon to Sweden, whose capital, Stockholm, held the title 'Cultural Capital of Europe' last year. Sweden's Consul in Hong Kong, Ann Arefeldt, tells me Stockholm broke all records in 1998, with a 10 per cent increase in domestic tourists, and a six per cent increase in international arrivals.

Banking on clean air to win the race for 2004 Olympics

Stockholm is banking on fresh air to win the race to host the 2004 Olympic Games. Having earned a place in the short-list of five competing cities, the Swedish capital argues that its clean environment will bring the best out of athletes.

Stockholm last staged the Games in 1912 and is competing against Rome, Athens, Cape Town and Buenos Aires.

Poll manifesto

STOCKHOLM: Sweden's four-party coalition presented a joint election manifesto, two weeks before the Government looks set to be defeated by the opposition Social Democrats in a general election.
