30 held over $3m illegal fuel seizure

Customs officers have seized 160,000 litres of illicit oil, worth almost $3 million, and arrested 30 men in a three-day operation.

A 12 metre-long fuel tank, three containers and three trailers were also seized by Customs and Fire Services officers.

Crew arrested over fuel

A tank filled with 80 tonnes of smuggled diesel oil has been discovered attached to the bottom of a mainland cargo vessel. The vessel was heading for the mainland on Thursday night when Customs officers found the 20-metre-long tank beneath the vessel off Butterfly Beach, Tuen Mun. Four mainland crew members were arrested.

Pakhoed in bid for Transol

Dutch tank storage and shipping group Pakhoed says it plans to acquire German chemical distribution firm TH International Holding (Transol). Pakhoed said it had signed a letter of intent with Intercontinental Oil Supply & Crude Co. The deal will be backdated to December 31.

Liquid filth

On December 27 last year, a letter of mine was published in these columns regarding the re-filling of fish tank lorries at area 44 in Tuen Mun Harbour.

Despite the various outbreaks of E-coli and the fact that the Pillar Point sewage pipe has been ruptured, this has not deterred our lorry drivers, who queue up each morning to fill up their tanks with liquid filth.

Chigago storage tanks sold

Stolt-Nielsen is selling its 71-hectare Chicago tank storage facility to free capital to invest in new terminals, especially in the Asia-Pacific region and Latin America. The bulk liquids transporter owns two other terminals in New Jersey and Texas. The three US terminals have been valued at US$115 million.

Tank storage firms in tie-up

Dutch shipping and tank storage firm Koninklijke Van Ommeren says it will pay US$8.5 million for a 50 per cent stake in tank storage firm United Storage & Tank Terminals, a unit of India's IMC.

The company, which will be renamed United Van Ommeren Tank Terminals, operates terminals in the cities of Kandla and Karwar, and in Goa.

Singmarine in Thai deal

SINGMARINE Dockyard and Engineering, a member of Singapore's Keppel Group, says it has won a contract worth S$17 million (about HK$83.3 million) to design and build a second liquefied petroleum gas carrier for Thai Oil Co.

Singmarine expects to deliver the new vessel in mid-1995.

Road refuse

I WISH to express my concern about the lack of control over the littering of roads and highways by vans and lorries.

As a road user, I see all sorts of refuse left on roads and highways which are potentially dangerous for other road users.

The refuse I have seen includes such things as, shredded paper (large amounts), plastic bags and wooden boxes.

27 detained for smuggling

TWENTY-SEVEN crew from three Chinese vessels have been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle 370 second-hand television sets, 61 video cassette recorders and 14 hi-fi sets into China.

They were arrested by customs officers who intercepted the vessels during an anti-smuggling operation off Tai Lam over the weekend.

Bomb failure
