OMI orders Suezmax tankers

OMI Corp has placed an order for two 156,000 deadweight tonnes (dwt) Suezmax crude-oil tankers for delivery in January 1999 and May 2000.

Suezmax to take production role

The 135,015 deadweight tonnes Suezmax tanker Knock Buie will be converted into a floating production, storage and offloading vessel for use by Ranger Oil in Angola's offshore Kiame field.

Fixing pressure gives rates boost

ALTHOUGH fixing last week was about recent levels, there has been a marked improvement in rates.

Some 14 very large crude carriers (VLCCs) and one ultra-large crude carrier (ULCC) were fixed during the week, totalling around four million tonnes, but the majority of this came in the last three days, putting pressure on rates.

Greek buyers dominate market

TANKER prices improved slightly last week though the dry-freight market remains mostly wthout direction, with rates hardly varying from most recent levels.

Greek owners have been by far the dominant force in second-hand purchases, with a number of concluded sales last week and many inspections of vessels taking place.
