Nice visuals, confusing plot

Rich in visual imagery but short on narrative coherence, The Sun Also Rises is another lacklustre entry by the Chinese New Wave directors who seem to have forgotten the virtue of simple storytelling in their blind pursuit of special effects.

The film was shot in Yunnan 's Shangri-la and the Gobi Desert, and it boasts an endless parade of stunning landscapes.

At Thursday's Hong Kong Asian Film Festival opening press conference, it was announced that more than 80 films would be shown between September 23 and October 10 - with two of the top attractions, director Jiang Wen's The Sun Also Rises and Edmond Pang Ho-cheung's Exodus, already sold out.

Of Venice and Toronto, and a weird offering from Edmond Pang

Next to Cannes and Berlin, the two other big film festivals everybody wants to get into are Venice and Toronto, both of which are soon. The screenings at Venice Lido runs from August 29 to September 8, while Toronto's run is September 6 to 15.
