Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying had Hongkongers' housing needs in mind on his first official visit to Tianjin yesterday. He also pledged that his cabinet members would listen to the voices of Hongkongers in the mainland, as they were "members of the Hong Kong family".

Women in China still not equal to men

If a new survey by an international accounting group is correct, half (51 per cent) of senior management jobs in mainland companies are now held by women. This places the mainland ahead of Hong Kong, other Asian economies and such Western countries as the United States and Britain, according to the report by Grant Thornton International, which surveyed chief executives and chairmen of 6,627 companies in all industry sectors around the world.

Party's number two woman Sun Chunlan named chief of Tianjin

Sun Chunlan, one of two women on the Communist Party's new Politburo, was appointed party secretary of Tianjin yesterday, succeeding new Politburo Standing Committee member Zhang Gaoli.

Sun, 62, was previously party chief of Fujian and a Central Committee member. She won promotion to the Politburo last week.

China has promoted one of its most senior female leaders to Communist Party chief of the northern port city of Tianjin, which the government is trying to turn into a global financial centre, state media said on Wednesday.

Fujian party secretary Sun Chunlan is the only female provincial party chief. She is tipped to be party boss for Tianjin , one of the five national cities, in this round of reshuffles.

One of the few senior women cadres, 62-year-old Sun spent most of her career in trade unions and women's federations. Starting as a worker at Anshan Clock and Watch Factory in Liaoning in 1974, she then rose from director of the Anshan Women's Federation to become the director of Liaoning Provincial Women's Federation and the province's trade union in the late 1980s and the 1990s.

Women on the way up, says only female party secretary Sun Chunlan

Fujian party secretary Sun Chunlan , one of China's few senior women cadres, said yesterday she was "full of confidence" for women's future in top-level politics.

Sun, who is leading a 41-member provincial delegation that includes 14 women, said women delegates showed "high levels of competence in participating in politics".
