A balanced diet

A friend of mine complained - in a nice way - about a meal her husband cooked for her. It consisted of about half a kilogram of scallops cooked in cream followed by cheesecake. It was meant to be romantic - a prelude to more intimate activities - but my friend was so stuffed that she wanted nothing more than to go to sleep.

Old scrimp to survive

SOME old people are skipping meals, walking to centres for the elderly instead of taking a bus and refusing recreational activities to save money, according to a survey released yesterday.

The majority of the respondents, on public assistance, want payments raised from $1,810 to $2,400 a month.

Haggis for poet's feast

DOUGIE Painter, a chef at a Glasgow hotel, hoists the world's biggest haggis, which weighs about 300 kg (668.4 lb) and is made of 80 ox stomachs. The haggis will be one of the attractions at the World's Biggest Burns Supper on Sunday. Robert Burns is Scotland's most famous poet.
