Auctions speak louder

The art market seems to be recovering its allure after a year in which no amount of wooing was able to rekindle the fervour of buyers. Sotheby's early April six-day sale indicated that the market had hit bottom last year.

Artist plays mind games with viewers

Dominating one of the spacious white-walled galleries at Blum & Poe in Los Angeles is a towering, glittering, gold sculpture: swirling flames emanate from a vast skull, the cavernous eye sockets occupied by smaller skulls, the whole effect like that of a gilded alien cadaver in a hurricane.

There are two surreal shows at the Victoria and Albert Museum this spring. The first is the headline exhibition, Surreal Things, which costs GBP9 (HK$140). If you get tired queuing for it, you can always take a rest on the big, red, hot-lips sofa (below) that's a signature of the surrealist movement.

No junks in the harbour, typhoons or Lotus Blossoms in this one, although Moreira is the first to declare that it does contain one Chinese character.
