Thoroughly modern Suzie

Who - or what - is Suzie Wong? Is she the protagonist in Richard Mason's 1957 novel The World of Suzie Wong or the stereotypical cliche of Chinese women in its 1960 Hollywood adaptation? Or is she a symbol of oriental exoticism and a white male's sexual fantasy?
