Cicadas set to swarm US as breeding cycle begins

A cicada "invasion" is imminent in the US, with millions of the large, cricket-like insects poised to emerge from the earth after 17 years lying in wait. The first of the bugs that are expected to blanket the US east coast have been spotted in North Carolina and New Jersey.

Swarming over locust records

Ancient Chinese invented many things. A lesser-known innovation was the collection of records of locust infestations over more than 1,000 years. Ma Shijun of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is credited as being the first to study this massive record nearly 50 years ago. Academic Zhang Zhibin and his researchers have now taken a fresher look.

'Starling squadrons' to tackle locust plague

About 100 counties in Sichuan province are under siege from swarms of locusts descending on rice crops in an average density of 100 per plant, the China News Service reported yesterday.

More than 3,700 sq km of farmland have been affected. The insects have already chewed through 47 sq km of crops.

Locust fight always left too late, says scientist

The marauding masses of locusts that chomp their way across the north and east of the country each summer could be stopped if authorities took preventive measures rather than purely reacting to the problem when it arises each year, experts have said.
