Swissair flights ready for takeoff

All Swissair flights in and out of Hong Kong with the exception of the one to Manila will resume today after the Swiss Government bailed out the airline. Two hundred Hong Kong tourists in Europe and 400 travellers in the SAR were stranded by Swissair's decision to ground its fleet on Wednesday.

Two hundred Hong Kong tourists travelling with Swissair were stranded in Europe last night after the carrier grounded its entire fleet.

Another 400 travellers in Hong Kong waiting to fly back to Europe were also affected by the financial crisis rocking the airline.

Bleak year for aircraft's safety record

More than 230 people have been killed in other accidents involving the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 in the past year.

The biggest death toll came in a crash almost a year ago off the Canadian coast when a Swissair MD-11 went down near Nova Scotia on September 2 killing all 229 on board.

Private Air

A little-known European airline has come to the rescue of Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres, after his national airline said it could not provide a plane for his visit to Macau on April 17. Swissair subsidiary Private Air has agreed to provide a long-haul aircraft for the trip.

Export growth doubles two-way airline traffic

TRAFFIC between Switzerland and Hong Kong has doubled in the past five years, says Juerg Mueller, Swissair's passenger sales manager in the territory.

As Hong Kong's importance as a big re-exporting centre increases, travel and traffic between the two is expected to increase further.
