Clampdown on illegal toy-sword sales

Exhibitors found selling long metal toy swords to minors at the Ani-Com and Game Fair had sheathed their swords and hidden them from sight yesterday, and were displaying prominently signs declaring that they would not sell them to under-18s.

Freebie replica swords spark debate

Recently, local publishers of comic books have been giving away replicas of swords used by the heroes in comics.

At the Comics Festival in July, thousands of teenage readers also swamped stalls to purchase replica swords of different sizes.

The craze for replica weapons has sparks calls for stricter controls over the industry.

Sword opponents fail to make their mark

Organisers of the Hong Kong Book Fair failed to make their point yesterday when two exhibitors insisted on displaying ceremonial swords for sale.

The exhibitors refused to remove the swords despite the organisers' claims that they did not fit the spirit of the fair.
