Syria opposition accuses US of undermining revolt

Syria’s main anti-regime group said on Friday the US was undermining the country’s revolt by seeking an opposition overhaul, as the UN accused rebels of possible war crimes over a video showing soldiers being executed.

Syrian rebels killed 78 soldiers on Thursday, about half of them in attacks on military checkpoints in the north just hours after a wave of bombings hit the Damascus area, activists said.

The unusually high toll for regime forces came after days of intense air bombardment of rebel positions around the country that killed hundreds more.

A car bomb blast in Beirut on Friday killed eight people including a top security official linked to the anti-Damascus camp in Lebanon, prompting opposition calls for the government to resign.

The rush-hour bombing in the predominantly Christian district of Ashrafieh also left 86 people wounded, Information Minister Walid Daouk said.

Rebels downed a helicopter in fierce fighting yesterday with troops seeking to retake a key Syrian town, a watchdog said, as peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi warned the conflict risks setting the region ablaze.

The battle for the Damascus-Aleppo highway raged around the northwestern town of Maaret al-Numan even as Brahimi appeared to have won tentative support for a ceasefire plan.

Man charged in UK for hostage-taking in Syria

British police say they have charged a man arrested last week at Heathrow Airport for allegedly kidnapping two journalists in Syria.

Scotland Yard said on Tuesday that 26-year-old Shajul Islam, who was arrested October 9 at Heathrow after arriving on a flight from Egypt, will appear in court on Wednesday.

Syrian rebels have shot down a fighter jet in the northern province of Aleppo, a monitoring group and an army defector said.

"The rebels shot down the fighter jet in the west of Aleppo province, where fierce battles are taking place," said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"The jet was bombarding the village of Khan al-Asal."

Syria banned Turkish passenger flights from its airspace from Sunday in a retaliatory move after Turkey confiscated a cargo of what Russia said was radar equipment en route from Moscow to Damascus last week.
