Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu has urged caution over international calls to arm Syrian rebels and reserved the right for the Jewish state to block the supply of weapons that could be turned against it.

Syria rebel attack on school kills 9 students, teacher: TV

A rebel mortar attack on a school in a camp for displaced people near Damascus on Tuesday killed nine students and their teacher, Syrian state television reported, branding it a “horrific crime.”

The broadcaster also reported 20 people were injured in the attack, but it was not immediately possible to verify their identities.

Syrian warplanes hammered Damascus on Monday with loud explosions shaking the capital on the fourth day of a Muslim holiday marked by the failure of a ceasefire bid, a correspondent said.

The explosions, which appeared to come from several different districts, could be heard over about two hours and were among the most intense in the city since the beginning of the 19-month conflict.

Syria army says will fight back against rebel violations

Syrian rebels announced the failure of a truce declared for Eid al-Adha, as fighting raged, warplanes buzzed key cities and at least 150 people were reported killed since a ceasefire came into effect.

The Syrian army on Saturday accused rebels of committing increasing violations of a failed truce proposed for the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday and vowed to fight back.

“For the second day, terrorist groups continued to flagrantly violate the ceasefire announced and respected by the army command,” the military said in a statement on state television.

Syrian rebels have shot down a fighter jet in the northern province of Aleppo, a monitoring group and an army defector said.

"The rebels shot down the fighter jet in the west of Aleppo province, where fierce battles are taking place," said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"The jet was bombarding the village of Khan al-Asal."
