Vermints Peppermint 40 grams for HK$39, Just Green

Typical mints contain chemicals, meat by-products or artificial sweeteners, but not this all-natural variety made in Vermont from US-grown organic ingredients. You can actually see little shreds of mint leaves in each white pastille.

On the shelf

I'm not sure why United States-made corn syrup is so expensive, but I found a much cheaper alternative to the Karo brand, which is flavoured with vanilla anyway (despite what the company might think, I don't always want to taste vanilla in my desserts).

Monday was another crazy night in Lan Kwai Fong as the Canadian community celebrated their national day. The ice hockey-loving North Americans share July 1 as a holiday with Hong Kong, so the habit has been to throw a street bash the night before, with a mass chorus of the national anthem, Oh Canada, at midnight.

corn syrup

Corn syrup - at least the high-fructose type - is being blamed for everything from obesity to liver disease.

What is it? Corn syrup is derived from corn - not the sweet type we eat as a vegetable but the starchy varieties used as cattle feed. Through a complex process, the starch is converted into the clear liquid sweetener known as corn syrup.
