Old units reprieved as commission inches towards metrication

Metric units will have to measure up alongside feet and inches according to a new European plan aimed at boosting exports to the United States.

Housing sales a hit

China Overseas Land and Investment has sold four of its Royal Camellia units in Yuen Long at $3,250 per square foot in the past two days and is offering another four units at $3,218 per square foot. The project has 22 three-storey units measuring 1,768 sq ft to 1,913 sq ft.

It all adds up for metric whizkids

Four students were rewarded for their efforts in promoting the metric system in Hong Kong with a prize worth $1,500.

The pupils, who attend the Sheng Kung Hui Lam Woo Memorial Secondary School, were jointly awarded a book coupon at a ceremony at the Government Secretariat Conference Hall in Central on winning the Best Metrication Ambassador Team Competition.

Warning over dried seafood

Dried-seafood shops are fleecing customers by deceiving them into thinking goods are cheap, the Consumer Council has warned.

Complaints to the council concerning the stores have nearly doubled in two years, said representative Dr Lo Chi-kin.

Last year, 148 complaints involving sales worth $520,000 were made, compared to 89 cases in 1995 and 76 in 1994.

CONSUMERS are still weighing their gold in taels and their vegetables in catties, and buying flats by the square foot, despite a 15-year campaign to persuade them to go metric.

The chairman of the Government Metrication Committee, Kenneth Yuhung Tongson, admitted there was little that could be done to change the habits of a lifetime.
