The Development Bureau has received 114 applications for the seven historic buildings. The first batch of buildings, which includes Old Tai O Police Station, Fong Yuen Study Hall and Lai Chi Kok Hospital, has seen five proposals shortlisted.

Dramatic beginnings

The disastrous fire in the Shek Kip Mei squatter area in 1953 made 53,000 squatters homeless overnight. As an emergency measure, the government built resettlement blocks nearby to re-house those affected by the fire. This was the beginning of a public housing programme that would grow greatly in scale in the following decades.

Tung ponders 'new era' official residence

Colonialist memories at Government House have spurred Tung Chee-hwa into considering the creation of a new official residence to mark the birth of the Special Administrative Region.

Mr Tung, who turns 60 today, confirmed his rejection of the 142-year-old house as his official residence last night, saying he would continue to live in his soon-to-be-enlarged Mid-Levels flat.
