Case struck a chord for expat tai-tais

Watching Nancy Kissel's retrial almost every day were a group of women who didn't know Kissel or her murdered investment-banker husband, but felt they identified with some issues raised in it.

They were tai-tais - expatriates who described ambitious husbands, isolation and the abandonment of their own careers back home as elements in their lives.

Promo for youthful label crowds out tai-tais and the usual suspects

If Lane Crawford is trying to woo a younger fashion clientele, its latest pop-up store within a store is definitely hitting the target. Even before the launch party for American Apparel started last Friday evening, the IFC store was already filling up with customers eager to snap up the trendy US label, known for its casual cool, sexy ads and bright colours.

True tai-tais put their money where their whims are

How do you tell a bona fide tai-tai from a wannabe? It all comes down to spending power. With a haute couture display and a store opening, the Italian designer Valentino's do at the Landmark atrium on Monday had the society ladies out and about. As usual, some socialites were just there to see and be seen. Others aimed to shop til' they dropped.

Royal Jelly fad - it's in the bag

Sales of 'Royal Jelly' handbags have been brisk at the impromptu sale organised this week by a couple of entrepreneurial socialites, who are using the Central Golf emporium as the unlikely venue for their little enterprise.

Tai tais hit the school of barred frocks

Roses are red,

And best bought at Joyce

I'd never stop shopping

If given the choice

That was Lai See's 'Ode On A Hong Kong Tai Tai'.

We wrote it after discovering that poetry is the missing ingredient in the trophy wife's life.

Well. It's missing from her class list, at any rate.

To celebrate the opening of the new Mondi boutique at the Sheraton Hotel's shopping arcade, a cocktail party was held and tai-tais galore turned up to see what the fashion house, designed by American Maggie Norris, had to offer.

Found in space

Karl Lagerfeld blasts off into outer space for Chloe's fall/winter collection, giving new meaning to being spacey.

And if the sensuous and slinky gowns are anything to go by, any astronaut will definitely be driven to distraction.

Terri's fitting remarks cut idea down to size

Terri Holladay, the Vietnamese-American stunner on the cover of this month's Orient Beauty magazine, tells a tale other tai-tais might want to take note of.

Having just moved apartments, she wanted to get rid of some old (read one season old Versace ) clothes.

An uplifting experience

IT IS being billed as the next biggest trend after the Gucci bamboo-handle bag, black patent leather boots and colonic cleansing. Everybody from Princess Diana to Mel Gibson, Cliff Richard to Valerie Campbell (mother of supermodel Naomi) has tried the CACI 'facelift', said to be the best thing this side of surgery. And now it's here.

On the cutting edge

JOCKEY Gary Moore (right) has obviously learnt a few tricks from the best tai-tais in town. While having his nails manicured and his hair coiffured in a Central salon recently, Moore spent the whole time with a portable telephone attached firmly to his ear. The staff had to work around the telephone while he arranged the finer details of shipping in a horse from Britain.
