Tajiks set to elect strongman leader for a fourth term

Voters in Tajikistan, the poorest state in the former USSR, were on Wednesday expected to hand President Emomali Rakhmon an easy victory for a fourth-term mandate at the helm of his Central Asian state bordering Afghanistan.

Getting to know the 'stans'

When the Soviet Union broke up in 1991, a number of new countries came into existence. These included five countries in Central Asia. Their names all end with the suffix 'stan', which means 'land/country' (just as in the older countries Afghanistan and Pakistan). Here is some information about them.
