Takanonami suffers surprise loss

Tokyo: Yokozunas (grand champions) Takanohana and Akebono both won, but ozeki (champion) Takanonami suffered an upset yesterday, opening day of the 15-day Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.

Three's company at top

AMERICAN Musashimaru pushed out fellow ozeki (champion) Wakanohana, leaving himself tied with American Akebono and Takanonami at 9-1 with five days left in the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo.

One bout behind at 8-2 were newly-promoted yokozuna (grand champion) Takanohana, his brother Wakanohana, and number 11 maegashira (senior wrestler) Daishoho.

Takanohana's lucky 13

TAKANOHANA beat fellow ozeki (champion) Musashimaru yesterday and stayed on top with a clean 13-0 mark with two days left in the 15-day Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo.

Takanohana, seeking his sixth championship and promotion to Sumo's highest rank of yokozuna (grand champion), swept in low and grabbed hold of Musashimaru's belt and drummed the hefty American out.

Sumo 'big-shots' on target for charity

JAPAN'S top sumo wrestlers yesterday raised $250,000 for the Community Chest in a Noon-Day Gun firing which was sponsored by seven Japanese firms in the territory.

Grand champion Akebono fired the Jardines gun, watched by colleagues and the corporate sponsors.

Akebono bounces back in grand style

TOWERING grand champion Akebono stamped his authority on the Sumo in Hongkong tournament by bouncing back from an early defeat to win the overall crown at the Hongkong Coliseum yesterday.

Akebono, the world's only yokozuna (grand champion), convincingly captured Saturday's tournament with none of his five opponents lasting more than 10 seconds in the ring with him.
