Has our society lost all its marbles or collective brainpower to spend taxpayers' money on something so trivial? I suppose most readers would be troubled by the front-page news ("Taxi driver cleared in 50-cent court case", May 17).

Hong Kong is currently going through a period of realisation that, because a greater proportion of its inhabitants are in the "senior" category, something needs to be done about the retirement age.

Cheating cabbie fined for trying to use obsolete Peruvian notes

A taxi driver who tried to deceive passengers with Peruvian banknotes that were no longer in circulation tarnished Hong Kong's reputation as a tourist paradise and shamed law-abiding cabbies, a deputy magistrate said.

Liu Ka-ho, 30, was fined HK$3,700 and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service for the six charges that he had pleaded guilty to.

HK$4.4m of silver seized at checkpoint

Customs seized 515kg of smuggled silver valued at HK$4.42 million on Friday from a private car entering the city via the Western Corridor border post. A man and a woman were arrested. It was the biggest such seizure in a year.

A Singaporean taxi driver has been heralded as a hero after he returned S$1.1 million (US$900,000) in cash to a vacationing Thai couple who left the money in his cab.

Sia Ka Tian, 70, was shocked to find the money in a black paper bag on the back seat on Monday after he dropped the couple off at a shopping centre.

Taxi driver who killed three pedestrians jailed

A taxi driver who killed three people when he ploughed into them after they had survived a bus crash was jailed for three years and four months yesterday.

Judge Johnny Chan Jong-herng also suspended the driving licence of Chan Yun-sang, 44, for six years. He must pass a test before obtaining a new licence.

Taxi driver shot dead in botched police raid

A stray bullet fired by police killed a taxi driver on Monday night in Dongguan after dozens of police officers from neighbouring Shenzhen fled a nightclub chased by a gang armed with knives and sticks.

Luo Lijun, from Hunan, died after he was shot in the stomach around midnight in front of the Legend Club in Changan township, the Nanfang Daily reported.
