Cause of jet's bungled takeoff still a mystery

It's still not clear why a Finnair flight almost took off from a taxiway instead of a runway at the city's airport.

An inquiry found that the plane, carrying 272 people, had no problems with light signals or radio communication and the weather was fine.

Airport runway safety measures worth the effort

Aviation safety depends not only on the experience and competence of pilots, but also the quality of support and facilities on the ground. Pilot error seems to have been the main cause of a worrying incident in September, in which a Hong Kong Airlines jet carrying 122 passengers and seven crew attempted to take off from a taxiway rather than a runway at Chek Lap Kok.

Pilots again rate Kai Tak as dangerous

Pilots from around the world have again awarded Kai Tak airport their worst rating ahead of the move to Chek Lap Kok.

It was rated a 'black star' because of the short distance between the runway and parallel taxiway by the International Federation of Airline Pilots Associations.

Airport runway accident delays arrivals and departures

The braking system of a Virgin Atlantic jet clipped the runway at Kai Tak, closing the airport for half an hour.

Inbound flights were kept in the air and departures delayed from 3.55 pm to 4.25 pm yesterday while firemen inspected the Airbus A340 and the runway.

Airport worker may lose job

THE airport worker who caused an aircraft to abort a landing seconds before touchdown could lose his job for trying to sweep the runway.

The employee was spotted on the runway on Thursday apparently unaware he was directly in the path of an approaching Air China jumbo jet.
