SPIRIT OF adventure

In Hong Kong until recently, connoisseurship of spirits was mostly confined to a couple of specialised fields - cognac and Scotch whisky. If people ordered gin, vodka, rum or tequila, they might have expressed a brand preference, but bar patrons were unaware of the profusion of niche products emerging in those spirit categories. All that is changing - and fast.

From its inception in 1963, The Mandarin and its bars were certainly the more elegant epicentre of whatever nightlife Central had to offer. From the swank supper club, the Button, in the 1960s, to the Harbour Room, a cabaret in the 1970s, to the still extant Captain's Bar and The Chinnery, the iconic venues provided a more upscale alternative to the sailor scene in Wan Chai.

Romance in creation

Style guru Louise Kou is now setting her designs on helping loveless singles. At the launch of her KouDestiny club, which will organise social outings for the dateless, eligible guests arrived at Opera Gallery in Central on February 26 with lace masks, loosening up on artisan tequila and sparkling wine sprinkled with gold flakes.

Shining star

Tequila Kola got it right in describing its Rockstar furniture as 'striking' and 'kitsch'. The bed (queen size only, (HK$21,980) features an ornate carved-oak headboard upholstered in swirly black velvet that screams: 'Touch me, feel me.' You needn't be a Who fan, however, to appreciate the collection's table setting (above).

Go for glam

Tequila Kola's store in Central (shop 228, Prince's Building, tel: 2520 1611) is a fraction of the size of its Ap Lei Chau outlet, which is why it's been kitted out judiciously. The texture-rich interior features signature pieces of furniture plus giftware and accessories. Worth checking out is its Beluga range, which has Euro styling and a touch of glam.

Show business

Another show flat doing double duty displaying new furnishings is Sino Land's development at 1 Castle Peak Road, Gold Coast. Kitted out by Tequila Kola, the 1,800 sq ft apartment features the Shou bed (queen, HK$10,100; king, HK$10,345) and bedside tables (HK$1,680 each) made of Suren hardwood indigenous to Indonesia.
