Funding increased to protect species at risk

The Ocean Park Conservation Foundation has announced a record annual budget of HK$5.63 million to expand and diversify its project to preserve endangered species like freshwater turtles and pangolins.

Terrapins seized in swoop

Thousands of terrapins were seized and 16 people arrested when marine police intercepted three vessels in Hong Kong waters south of Po Toi Island. The consignment was worth about $450,000.

Six tonnes of live terrapins seized amid E. coli scare

More than six tonnes of live terrapins have been seized by Customs officers from a mainland-bound fishing vessel in Hong Kong waters.

The seizure came after Shenzhen authorities reportedly banned the import of freshwater turtles in an E. coli scare.

Turtles worth $120,000 seized from balcony in raid

Ten turtles worth more than $120,000 were seized from a Wan Chai flat by Agriculture and Fisheries Department officers yesterday.

The owner of the turtles, a 35-year-old man, was taken for questioning.

Department veterinary of ficer Dr Howard Wong Kai-hay said the trader had been selling turtles to rich residents as a gimmick for between $8,000 and $12,000.

Tropical turtles killed by kindness

Animal welfare campaigners, conservationists and the Government have warned against releasing giant turtles into the wild after a flood of sick reptiles has been found.

Buddhists traditionally release creatures such as turtles and terrapins, believing the ceremonies will bring them long life and good luck.
