Armed man sparks Beijing airport alert

A Hong Kong man sparked a security alert at Beijing airport when officers found a mortar shell, a hand grenade and machine gun ammunition in his hand luggage.

But the 40-year-old man was released following the incident on Sunday night when it was found the weapons contained no explosives, the Beijing Times reported yesterday.

All the weapons were confiscated.

BUILD PERMANENT MEMORIAL PARK ON 9/11 SITE

A number of proposals have been submitted for the redevelopment of the World Trade Centre site in New York.

Four of the plans propose to create the 'tallest building in the world' (South China Morning Post, December 20).

My immediate reaction was one of disbelief. Why would anyone want to do such a thing?

Balanced and forthright assessment of what lay behind 9/11 attacks

In contrast to your correspondent Joshua Goldman-Brown ('Blaming US for terror attacks was thoughtless,' South China Morning Post, September 12), I found the Post editorial to which he referred a balanced and well argued piece and a breath of fresh air in the mostly uncritical anniversary reporting.

Ban on Mideast air passengers racist

I refer to the report 'China bars Mideast passengers' (South China Morning Post, October 13). If this is so, not only should it 'be reconsidered', as the Post says in its Editorial, but also the originators of this policy should be immediately removed from any position of power.
