Hunt for survivors after 15 killed in blast at Texas fertiliser plant

The search continued yesterday for survivors of a huge explosion that tore through a fertiliser plant in a small central Texas town on Wednesday night. At least 15 people died and more than 160 were injured in the blast, which destroyed buildings and created a potential threat of toxic fumes settling over the area.

Two people died and more than 80 were hurt when at least 140 vehicles collided on a Texas highway in dense fog, leaving trucks twisted on top of each other and authorities rushing to pull survivors from the wreckage.

"It is catastrophic," Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy Rod Carrol said of Thursday's pile-up. "I've got cars on top of cars."

A train crashed into a parade float carrying US military veterans and their spouses in Texas, killing four people and injuring 17, police and parade organisers said.

Ten were in critical condition and seven others were listed as stable, Midland police chief Price Robinson said.
