Fashion venture that helps local communities

Thopdan Dorjee, 32, is the sales manager for Norlha, a not-for-profit operation that takes yak wool provided by Tibetan nomads and spins it into scarves and wraps that have recently caught the eye of fashion houses like Hermes and Lanvin Homme. So far, 120 nomads are taking part in the project. But running a business where social responsibility is more important than profit is a challenge.

Who started it? Born in Seoul, South Korea, 50-year-old Wooyoungmi has been designing men's clothes for more than 20 years. After studying fashion at Seoul University, she launched her first menswear line, Solid Homme, in 1988. She relocated to Paris and launched her eponymous line in 2002. She continues to show twice yearly collections in Paris, where she also has a boutique.

Who started it? Ca$hmere is a collaborative venture between designer John Scher and visionary Patrick Lo. Before launching Ca$hmere, Scher had designed his own lines for women and men for more than 10 years. Originally from Hong Kong, Lo worked in finance before moving to New York to study merchandising and design at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
