The man who helped ban smoking in Hong Kong's bars and restaurants has been chosen to replace the hugely respected "flu fighter" Dr Thomas Tsang Ho-fai in leading the city's defence against epidemic diseases.

An epidemiologist will become the new head of the government’s disease prevention centre, succeeding outgoing chief Dr Thomas Tsang Ho-fai, the government said on Tuesday.

Aim to answer 999 calls in nine seconds

I refer to G. Marques' letter ("Delays on 999 call line were unacceptable", October 30), expressing concern about the delays in handling 999 emergency calls.

The Hong Kong police undertake to provide a timely and efficient service for 999 callers 24 hours round the clock.

The resignation of Dr Thomas Tsang Ho-fai as head of the government's disease prevention centre last month came as a shock to the city.

The unexpected move has prompted much speculation over why Tsang - Hong Kong's respected and indefatigable "flu fighter" and defender of the city against severe acute respiratory syndrome in 2003 - who would leave public service after 20 years.

Thomas Tsang played a key role during the Sars outbreak.

The man in charge of defending Hong Kong against the threat of deadly epidemics has resigned, causing shock and regret in the medical world.

Dr Thomas Tsang Ho-fai, 46, has been head of the Centre for Health Protection since 2009 but was already well known for his star role during the severe acute respiratory syndrome pandemic in 2003.

When Steve Jobs kicked the bucket, the satirical Onion news website ran this now-legendary headline: Last American Who Knew What The F*** He Was Doing Dies.

I felt something similar yesterday when the government announced that Dr Thomas Tsang Ho-fai, controller of the Centre for Health Protection, would quit by the end of the year.
