Hong Kong set to lose No 3 port rank to Shenzhen

Shenzhen is set to overtake Hong Kong as the world's third-busiest container port this year for the first time ever on an annual basis.

This comes as total box volumes through Shenzhen's four main facilities have continued to climb despite the downturn in global trade.

By comparison, volumes through Hong Kong have dropped, especially from river trade and barge business.

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC) has revised down its forecast for Hong Kong's export growth for the year from 1 per cent growth to a 1 per cent decline, said deputy executive director Benjamin Chau.

Shanghai port operator books 31pc net decline

Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), the Shanghai-listed operator of the city's ports, said interim net profit declined 30.73 per cent to 1.71 billion yuan (HK$1.94 billion), while revenue fell 13.6 per cent to 7.9 billion yuan.

Shanghai is the world's busiest port in terms of tonnage and the second-busiest container port, behind Singapore.

Shenzhen container traffic declines 19.8pc

Container throughput in Shenzhen, the mainland's second-busiest port, declined further last month, dimming hopes of a quick recovery in the country's exports.

Total container throughput fell 19.8 per cent year on year to 1.41 million twenty-foot equivalent units (teu) in June, worse than the 17.7 per cent decline in May, according to official figures.

Drop in air cargo

Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals has reported a second consecutive quarter of declining air-cargo throughput. It blamed the poor result on continued softness in demand in the United States. Throughput in the three months to June was 374,838 tonnes, a 12.4 per cent fall against the same period last year.

Port cargo throughput stable

Port cargo throughput for Hong Kong held up in the first quarter this year at a time when a global slowdown is weighing on exports. Throughput rose 8 per cent from a year earlier to 43.1 million tonnes in the first quarter this year. Of this total, inward port cargo also rose 8 per cent, to 26.8 million tonnes, while outward port cargo increased 9 per cent to 16.3 million tonnes.

Hactl in 24pc throughput boost

Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Ltd (Hactl) saw a 24 per cent rise in throughput to 161,893 tonnes last month compared with the same month last year. Hactl handled 1.42 million tonnes between January and November 30, up 20 per cent year on year.

Singapore throughput edges up

The Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) says December container throughput rose to 1.114 million teus (20 ft equivalent units), up 1.37 per cent from 1.099 million in November. Total cargo tonnage also rose to 26,747 million tonnes from November's 25,827 million tonnes, it said.
