Southern China braced for second battering by storms

Most parts of southern China should expect another round of downpours, thunderstorms and gusty winds, the National Meteorological Centre said, with hailstorms also possible in several areas.

6,000 strikes of lightning recorded

The Observatory recorded 6,003 strikes of lightning between 6am and 7am yesterday as a trough of low pressure moved in from Guangdong to bring thunderstorms and rain to the city. The trough weakened during the day to be replaced by a maritime airstream.

Hong Kong has just endured its wettest month in 125 years of recorded weather history.

The Observatory said that by 5pm yesterday it had recorded 1,245mm of rain for the month, dethroning May 1889, when 1,241.1mm fell, as the wettest on record.

However, May 30, 1889, remains the wettest day on record; 520.6mm of rain fell in Kowloon that day.

Deluge brings record heatwave to an end

The stifling month-long heatwave ended yesterday with a thunderstorm and downpour that finally brought temperatures below 30 degrees Celsius.

The very hot weather warning was cancelled at noon yesterday after being in force for a record 12 days, or 286 hours, since July 24.

Rescue helicopter blown over as wild thunderstorms roll in

A HK$79 million government rescue helicopter was flipped on its side as thunderstorms and wind gusts of up to 130km/h brought wild weather to the city yesterday.

Flights were delayed, trees knocked down and high-rise scaffolding threatened to fall as a line of thunderstorms buffeted the city for most of the day.

Woman crushed by tree as heavy rains pound city

A 72-year-old woman was crushed to death yesterday by a falling tree as heavy rain buffeted much of the city.

The woman was walking opposite Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate in East Kowloon at noon when the 10-metre tree fell, pinning her to the ground by her right arm.

Lightning kills one as storms rage

One person was killed and two were injured after being struck by lightning during a thunderstorm in Yangjiang, about 200km southwest of Guangzhou.

The three people were trapped in a park by the storm when they were struck by lightning, the China News Service reported. However, it did not say when the incident happened.

HEAVY rain lashed Hong Kong yesterday, with a thunderstorm warning issued for two hours from 5.45pm. A total of 20mm was recorded from midnight to 7pm, with 10mm falling over the eastern SAR from 5.45pm to 7.45pm. No flooding was reported.
