More than half of Venice was left under water when the historic lagoon town was hit by exceptionally high tides this week.

Rowing association suggests flushing scheme to clean nullah water

Under the government's HK$100 billion plan to transform the former Kai Tak airport site into a modern district replete with housing and commercial towers, cruise terminals and a sports hub, it is proposed that the nullah there be turned into a river. However, government officials have admitted the river may not be clean enough for water sports activities.

Every day, there seems to be twice as much work as the day before with half the time to do it.

I think I'm not the only person who feels this way. Many people sleep less than six hours a night because they think they can get a lot of extra work done when the rest of the world is sleeping.

A red flag that tells us to clean up the harbour

In 1998, fish farmers in Ma Wan protected their stocks by turning back toxic red tides using the motors of their sampans. The blooms we have seen in Hong Kong waters over the past two weeks have been of a less harmful variety, as luck would have it. But the outbreaks are a timely reminder of how urgent the task of cleaning up our harbour really is.

Costal provinces plan bans on phosphate soap powders to protect the sea

Hebei province plans to ban the sale of phosphate detergents along its coast starting next year to try to stop the increase in the number of red tides in the regions seawater, the Xinhua News Agency has reported.

Non-toxic red tide off Lantau

Red tide was spotted off Lantau earlier this week, but the Government said it was non-toxic and did not affect fish.

Tides were seen by the Government Flying Service between Peng Chau and Hei Ling Chau and at West Lamma Channel on Tuesday, the Agriculture and Fisheries Department said.
