Hakka tycoon Aw Boon Haw was one of the most colourful overseas Chinese personalities of the 20th century. Better remembered in Hong Kong by the Cantonese name Wu Man-fu, Aw was born in Burma, in 1882. His father invented the famed Tiger Balm universal remedy, which Aw and his brother, Aw Boon Par, marketed to the Chinese diaspora.

Tiger Balm project approved

Cheung Kong (Holdings) has received approval for its 513,000-square-foot luxury residential redevelopment at the Tiger Balm Garden site in Tai Hang. Cheung Kong can develop four 41-storey towers with 11 podium levels. Last year, the developer paid a HK$943 million land premium. It has to retain the historic Haw Par Mansion, former residence of publishing tycoon Sally Aw Sian.

Money seals gardens' fate

Regarding the letter by Name And Address Supplied ('Tiger Balm Garden part of Hong Kong character', South China Morning Post, December 22), not so long ago these gardens were considered by residents to be in extremely 'bad taste' and only suitable for children and tourists to visit.
