At the same time, the revamp is being extended to historical structures as luxury brands fund various renovations. Among the latest is Tod's Group, which is sponsoring a major overhaul of the Colosseum in Rome, one of the world's most famous ancient sites.

Origins: Roger Vivier

Who started it?

Born in Paris in 1907, Roger Vivier was orphaned at the age of nine and brought up by his aunt. When he was 17 he attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts to study sculpture until family friends asked him to sketch a few shoe designs.

The new Benji collection from Italian label Tod's has sparked a fashion frenzy among style queens. The bags come in several styles and in materials such as calf leather and python skin. They also feature flap closures with metal fasteners. Some of the larger models have colour stitching, while all the roomy totes feature extra pockets and internal compartments.
