Poor tortoise

The court report of the burglar who boiled and ate a pet tortoise (South China Morning Post, March 19) is revealing.

While it is heartening to see the judge show clemency in sentencing for burglary, no mention is made of the poor tortoise.

It would seem from the report that the defendant was not indicted on any charge of cruelty to animals.
