Japanese cars losing reliability edge in consumers' bible's recommendations

Japan’s lock on Consumer Reports’ vehicle reliability rankings is starting to ease.

Three Japanese brands – Lexus, Toyota and Acura – took the top spots in this year’s survey, and seven of the top 10 brands are Japanese.

Jury awards US$3 million to victims of crash in which Toyota Camry accelerated suddenly

Toyota Motor is liable for a 2007 crash that left one woman dead and another seriously injured after a Camry suddenly accelerated, a jury in Oklahoma decided on Thursday.

The jury awarded US$1.5 million in monetary damages to Jean Bookout, the driver of the car who was injured in the crash, and US$1.5 million to the family of Barbara Schwarz, 70, who died.

Toyota Motor unveiled on Friday the next generation of cars featuring an autopilot system that will swerve to avoid collisions and also keep to the middle of the road, all without drivers touching the wheel.

The Japanese carmaker’s vehicles using the self-driving technology could be available on the market in just a few years’ time.

Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus is trying to shake off its stodgy image. So it’s opening a cafe.

The special lounges, the first of which is opening next week in Tokyo’s fashionable Aoyama district, are designed to look more like a chic home than a standard showroom. In fact, only one vehicle can be displayed at a time.

The world's largest carmaker forecast on Wednesday profit and revenue that missed analysts' estimates, based on outdated projections for the yen to trade at 90 against the US dollar and 120 versus the euro this fiscal year.
