UNDER the somewhat misleading title, ''Why Sofield Had To Go'' (Sunday Morning Post, June 5) Hong Kong Polytechnic director Professor Poon Chung-kwong claims to have ''compelling reasons to end [principal lecturer Trevor Sofield's] contract'', but declines to tell us what these reasons might be.

Inquiry deplored at staff meeting

HONG KONG Polytechnic staff yesterday passed a motion deploring the manner in which the management had handled an inquiry into problems in the Hotel and Tourism Management Department.

More than 360 members of the staff association attended a special general meeting, the largest turnout since 1985.

A total of 255 votes supported the motion while 71 opposed it.

Dismissed lecturer hits back at accusers

FORMER Hong Kong Polytechnic principal lecturer Trevor Sofield, sacked after an internal inquiry into problems in his department, has launched a scathing attack on the inquiry.

It was his first detailed response to the inquiry since he was told last Friday to leave the polytechnic within 24 hours.

Vote to test support for Polytechnic management

LECTURERS from Hong Kong Polytechnic's Hotel and Tourism Management Department are to vote on a motion today backing the management.

The motion, drafted by a group of lecturers after a 21/2-hour meeting with director Professor Poon Chung-kwong, also expresses disapproval of criticism made by four outgoing lecturers on Tuesday.
