The Environmental Protection Department plans to hire a consultant to look into the future of the facility. It will direct the consultant to study the incinerator's operation, and whether it needs to be downsized or relocated to other locations such as to a rock cavern or reclaimed land.

A truck driver escaped serious injury when his vehicle was crushed by one of 10 shipping containers that tumbled from their stacks after being hit by strong winds in Tsing Yi yesterday.

More trouble at the docks? Everyone sailing past Tsing Yi was in for a big surprise yesterday - but one certain to leave a smile on their faces. The 16.5-metre tall Rubber Duck, the work of Dutch conceptual artist Florentijn Hofman, was going through some warm-ups before being fully inflated and moved to Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui on May 2.

A 37-year-old man was killed early yesterday when the car he was driving collided with a van in Tsing Yi.

The accident occurred shortly after 3.30am on Tsing Kwai Highway near Container Terminal 3.

The driver of the car suffered serious head injuries and was taken unconscious to Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung, where he was declared dead.

With its well-developed transport hubs, public amenities and fresh air, many Hongkongers may see Tsing Yi as an ideal place in which to live and raise a family.

Sixty years ago, however, while the air would have been even fresher, transport was much less convenient: the only way off the island was a one-hour trip by rowing boat to Tsuen Wan.

Mum left son home alone to go gambling

A mother who left her four-year-old son alone at home to go gambling in Macau was put on 12 months' probation yesterday.

Cheung Kwai-mui, a 40-year-old housewife, went to Macau when her four-year-old son was asleep at home on the Shek Yam Estate, Kwai Tsing, last month. The boy called police when he woke up the next morning and found his mother was absent.
