HKU students get say on choice of vice chancellor

HKU chief should stay, critic says

A member of University of Hong Kong's governing body - a vocal critic of the outgoing vice chancellor's ability - now says Tsui Lap-chee should stay on until a successor is found.

Linus Cheung Wing-lam believes Tsui should be given an extension to his contract when it expires next August, according to another council member who spoke to him.

'First-generation' students get fund to broaden horizons

The University of Hong Kong yesterday unveiled a HK$6 million annual fund to help underprivileged students gain a fuller experience of academic life.

The 'First-in-the-Family Education Fund' will be offered to students joining the university in September whose parents do not have a degree and whose families earn less than HK$12,000 a month.

HKU's high ranking due to hard work and dedication: Tsui

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has been ranked 18th among the world's top 200 universities, according to the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) World University Rankings 2007.

The ranking makes HKU the second highest ranked university in Asia, just behind Tokyo University. The chairman of council of HKU, Victor Fung, said the results were 'a dream come true' for him.
