A direct-subsidy school is under pressure to scrap the national education curriculum days after the government announced schools would be free to decide whether to start the subject.

Britain's prestigious Harrow International School opened in Tuen Mun yesterday to a few hiccups, with several parents and children turning up unaware that their new academic term had yet to start.

More than 700 pupils start classes at the Hong Kong campus of Britain's famed Harrow School today.

Based in Tuen Mun, Harrow International School Hong Kong was allocated a 3.7-hectare site in So Kwun Wat near Tuen Mun in 2009 as part of the government's efforts to increase the availability of international school places.

Charity sale adds to boon for bookworms

It's shaping up to be a good month for bookworms, with Taiwanese company Eslite due to open its first Hong Kong store on Saturday in Hysan Place, Causeway Bay.

There's also a roaming sale of more than 350,000 books that have been donated to World Vision's Used Book Recycling Campaign, some priced as low as HK$5.

Book sale to build classrooms for needy

World Vision Hong Kong is holding a charity book sale to raise money to improve educational facilities for less fortunate children. Every dollar spent at the Used Book Recycling Campaign will be donated to build a new school in Shaanxi province to house more than 1,400 students and teachers.

Visiting boy, 7, dies in plunge from 31st floor

A seven-year-old mainland boy who had been in Hong Kong just 24 hours plunged to his death from a public-housing block yesterday after he ran ahead of his mother, got into a lift alone and pressed the button to the 31st floor.
