A doctor at Tung Wah Hospital's department of surgery was critically ill after he swallowed half a bottle of disinfectant in an apparent suicide attempt.

A mix-up of biopsy results at Tung Wah Hospital resulted in a 72-year-old man receiving two months of radiology treatment for non-existent prostate cancer and delayed the cancer diagnosis of a 69-year-old patient.

Medicine for everyone

The history of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals goes back to 1851, and can be traced directly to Kwong Fook I-tsz, a small temple built at Tai Ping Shan Street in Hong Kong Island's Western district. It was used by local people to house the spirit tablets of their ancestors.

Chinese medicine blueprint takes shape

Seven public Chinese medicine clinics will operate next year and become part of Hong Kong's official medical services for the first time.

Six more clinics will be opened in 2004 and a further five in 2005, providing a Chinese medicine outlet in each of the 18 districts in the territory, said a source close to the Hospital Authority.
