87 soldiers die in Syrian army’s highest toll: NGO

The Syrian army suffered its highest death toll since the start of rebel hostilities with at least 87 soldiers killed on Thursday, an observer group said, amid fears the civil war could become a broader conflict as tensions with Turkey escalate.

China’s Foreign Ministry urged Turkey and Syria to exercise restraint amid mounting border tensions which saw Turkish artillery hit targets inside Syria after five Turkish civilians were killed by Syrian fire.

The UN Security Council condemned Syria “in the strongest terms” for its deadly shelling of Turkey, while UN chief Ban Ki-moon urged restraint along the neighbours’ tinder-box border.
