The global factory farming industry means that millions of animals are raised for food in what can only be described as inhumane conditions. Similarly, the fur industry has a brutal track record and it prefers to keep consumers uninformed about how that divinely soft pelt on a designer coat, or the fluffy fur trim on a new jacket, was manufactured.

The true aims of leadership

We all know leadership is an important part of our daily lives, but not many of us understand the exact meaning of it. This is what the GSLN (Leaders for the New Generation) course aims to teach students.

I took part in the course recently. In the 70-hour course, there were interactive lectures and a challenging camp.

From suffering comes success

Whatever Rihanna released following the attack by Chris Brown was going to be heard in the context of that incident. The 21-year-old's fourth album Rated R is darker than anything she's done before, and it's a harder Rihanna who sings mostly about love gone wrong.

Brolly wipers replace plastic bags

Shoppers at some city malls will have their umbrellas wiped dry on rainy days rather than having the usual plastic bags to catch their brollies' drips.

Cleaning staff with a towel in their hands will be stationed at the main entrances of four malls under Sino Property Services on rainy days. Umbrella bags will not be necessary after the umbrellas are wiped dry.

Exhibition puts mall's souvenir gimmicks under one umbrella

Umbrella is not just Rihanna's big hit, it's also a souvenir gimmick the Tsim Sha Tsui mall Harbour City has been using for more than seven years. They've produced 12 different eye-catching parasols by designers from France to Japan since 2001, with each edition available only for folks who spend more than a specified amount at the mall.

Barbadian beauty turns up the heat

Rihanna's new album Good Girl Gone Bad offers both good news and bad. To expand her repertoire, Rihanna has dropped the unique Barbadian rhythms of her previous albums in favour of urban beats and mainstream melodies. This should attract new listeners, but may disappoint existing fans.

Harbour City offers another umbrella

By now, it has something of a tradition for the Harbour City mall to create a funky umbrella for its summer promotion. Since 2002, it has been producing artist-created umbrellas that customers can redeem after making store purchases to a certain amount.
