But over the past three years, jackhammers and construction equipment have worked on a changing face for changing times.

In April, on the eve of Hong Kong's return to China, its facelift and expansion will be complete.

One killed in lorry crash

A WOMAN was killed and a man seriously injured when they were struck by a runaway light goods vehicle outside the United States Consulate in Central.

The lorry went over a metre-high concrete wall constructed between the road and the pavement after a fatal accident about three years ago.

Group in freighter protest

A PRO-BEIJING group protesting outside the United States Consulate in Central yesterday condemned what it called America's ''imperialistic attitude'' in its handling of the Yinhe freighter affair. Wan Yin-kui of the Hong Kong Federation of Employees' Unions said the US had acted illegally when it searched the Chinese cargo ship for chemical weapons in international waters.
